TimKingTim King is Founder, President and CEO of Urban Prep Academies. Urban Prep Academies is a nonprofit organization that operates a network of public college-prep boys’ schools in Chicago. Most notably, Urban Prep includes the nation’s first all-male charter high school, and related problems and related programs aimed at promoting college success. Each year, 50 prominent African-American males who are professionals and/or executives in various fields, attend the convocation at Urban Prep to welcome new freshmen to the Academy and to pledge their support. The young men, in turn, pledge their commitment to study diligently and excel in school. The motto of Urban Prep is “I Believe.” Every year since its inception, 100% of Urban Prep graduates—all African-American males and mostly from low-income families—have been admitted to four-year colleges/universities.

Tim also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at Northwestern University and has contributed articles to the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the Huffington Post. Tim was named ABC World News “Person of the Week,” Chicago Magazine’s “Chicagoan of the Year,” and People Magazine’s “Hero of the Year.” He was also named as one of Ebony Magazine’s “Power 100.” King has been featured on a number of broadcast TV news and talk shows, including Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Moth/USA Networks’ Characters Unite series. He has been recognized by Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for his work with youth.

Tim has completed post graduate work in Kenya and Italy. He holds the Doctorate Honorius Causa from the Adler School; and has received the Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service and Juris Doctor Degrees from Georgetown University. In 1996, Tim became the guardian of a former student orphaned when his mother died. That student was once homeless and now has graduated from college. Having a positive impact on this young man’s life is the achievement of which Tim is most proud.
