Alluring audiences with emotionally tinged performances is Angela Bassett’s signature. She personifies dignity and pride whenever she performs. Her talent and abilities have repeatedly earned respect and acclaim from her peers and fans, making her one of the industry’s premier leading ladies.
Angela recently appeared in Antoine Fuqua’s “Olympus Has Fallen,” Lifetime’s “Betty and Coretta,” and can be seen in Gregg Araki’s Indie film “White Bird in a Blizzard,” and Kasi Lemmon’s “Black Nativity.”
A Yale School of Drama graduate, Angela started her career on the stage in several noteworthy performances on and off Broadway including: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” “Macbeth,” “His Girl Friday,” “Fences,” “Mountaintop” and more.
Moving from stage to small screen Angela received accolades for ABC’s mini-series “The Jacksons: An American Dream:” as well as for her narration of PBS’s “Africans In America:” NBC’s “E.R.:” and ABC’s ”Alias.” Audiences delighted when she joined FX’s popular “American Horror Story” for its third season.
Angela crossed over to the silver screen in John Singleton’s “Boyz N The Hood”. Other memorable films include, “Waiting to Exhale,” “Strange Days,” “Vampire In Brooklyn,” and “Notorious”.
She received NAACP Image Awards for “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “The Score,” “Music of the Heart,” “Malcolm X,” “Contact,” and “Boesman and Lena”. She received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for “Ruby’s Bucket of Blood” and Emmy nominations for CBS’ “The Rosa Parks Story” and PBS Storytime’s “Uncle Jed’s Barbershop.” Recently, Angela was honored with a Critics’ Choice nomination for “Betty and Coretta,” and a BET nomination for “Olympus Has Fallen.” Angela earned an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical for her intense portrayal of Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got To Do With It.”
Awards aside, one of the most gratifying moments of her career was the opportunity to merge faith and talent and give voice to various characters in the best-selling audio book The Bible Experience.
Angela and her husband, actor Courtney B. Vance co-wrote the book, Friends: A Love Story. They reside in California with their 7 year old twins, Bronwyn and Slater.
